PhD Student - Respiratory Infections

Part Time (26h/week) | initially limited to 1 year | Announcement number: 340-2024

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the experimental research group of Prof. Rohde at the Department of Respiratory Medicine/Allergology (Medical Clinic 1 - Biomedical Research Laboratory). 

The research focus of this group are respiratory infections in the context of chronic lung diseases. The candidate will work on a project investigating polymicrobial and host-microbe interactions in cystic fibrosis lung disease.

Your role

  • You will investigate interactions of respiratory pathogens with host cells and with each other using in vitro and ex vivo models of cystic fibrosis lung disease and other chronic respiratory diseases
  • You will plan and conduct experiments and ensure thorough documentation and analysis of data
  • You will further develop and expand existing experimental models to address the project's research questions
  • You will contribute to the writing of scientific manuscripts, conference contributions and reports

Who you are

  • You hold a Master of Science degree in biology, life sciences, microbiology or a related field, or you are about to complete your degree in the next three months
  • You have experience with tissue culture models (ideally using primary cells) and different molecular biological techniques (e.g. qRT-PCR, Western Blot)
  • Experience in 3D culture models, flow cytometry, and/or immunofluorescence imaging is considered a plus
  • You are highly motivated, well organized and enjoy working in a team
  • You have good communication skills and are highly proficient in both spoken and written English
  • Due to legal regulations, valid proof of measles immunity / measles vaccination is required.
